Lake Montriond

As a first off, I thought I'd tell you about Lake Montriond (or Lac Montriond), an absolute must on any visit to Morzine. A beautifil lake over 1100 meters above sea level.

Getting there from Morzine is pretty easy and you need just follow signs to Montriond and then signs to Lac Montriond travelling along the D228. It's about 5 - 10 minutes drive depending on which side of the valley you start on in Morzine itself.

Lac Montriond is the second largest lake in the Haute Savoie region of france and is a popular attraction all year round. During the winter months, the circuit around the lake is given over to cross country skiing and the lake is frozen over and covered in snow for much of the time.

During the summer months, the lake looks stunning! On a bright day, Lac Montriond is a deep emerald green colour thanks to the surrounding trees in the valley. The south side of the like is dominated by huge cliffs that regularly produce small rock slides. The lake itself is popular with locals as well as holiday makers and is great for fresh water fishing and swimming. A smaller section of the lake is reserved for swimming and is patrolled by a life guard giving a safe environment for children and families to swim in.

During August of each year, Lake Montriond hosts a spectacular firework display accompagnied by music. A fantastic sound and light experience thanks to the echoing cliffs and mountains.

If you get a chance during a visit, spend the evening on the eastern banks of the lank enjoying a picnic whilst enjoying the sunset at the far end of the lake. Or take advantage of any of the small restaraunts dotted around the lakes edge which all have outdoor seating.
